Are you one of those marketers who thinks building high-quality backlinks is a hard task? Well, you’re not alone. Getting higher rankings on Google is not a simple job.
Maybe you have tried everything from guest posting to requesting for mentions. But you are still waiting for the Almighty Google to cut you some slack.
Well, relax! Your days of pain are over. We have nine different strategies that will help your site gain high-quality backlinks and enhance your search visibility.
First, let’s cover some basics before we dive into how to get free quality backlinks.
What are backlinks?
According to Moz,
Backlinks also called “inbound links” or “incoming links,” are created when one website links to another. The link to an external website is called a backlink.
Here’s a video from Neil Patel explaining, “What Are Backlinks and How Do They Work?”
How to get free quality backlinks?
Having a robust link building strategy is the key to getting backlinks. Here are a few strategies to earn high-quality backlinks that will help you stay ahead of the competition and at the same time boost your rankings. A definite SEO win-win!
#1 High-Quality Content
Content is the greatest source and tool to generate backlinks. So your first task is to create high-quality content that people like enough that they link to it.
Also, high-quality content on your website affects readers. Always strive to delight readers with your content. Your primary purpose when creating and publishing content is for readers, not Google. In fact, Google’s algorithms are getting so good that they can assess readers’ experience. Ironically, this figures into your rankings. As you prioritize your readers, Google will reward you. Your content helps web masters decide whether to link to your website. It reflects your organization as a whole. If your website content appears inferior quality or lacks valuable information, other websites will not see you as a reliable brand worth linking to.
Therefore, create quality content that looks professional, informative and is easily readable to earn and keep backlinks.
Another consideration to get free quality backlinks is originality. Regurgitating or rewriting the same material is not interesting and certainly not original.
Some ideas for original content are:
- Conduct surveys
- Create case studies
- Analyze data for insights
- Interview experts
- Compile detailed, high-value guides
- Make checklists
- Ask your executive team about trends
- Probe customers for problems they have and research solutions
- Other content that can’t be found on the other websites.
When you publish original stats and information, other sites will link back to your fresh and recent information.
#2 Broken Link Building
Broken link building is the simplest method to get backlinks. And it works great.
A broken link is a page on a website that has been moved or removed. In other words, these are 404 error pages that notify visitors that the content they’re looking for no longer exists. This is a poor user experience, and no site owner wants this to happen. However, broken link building fixes this issue.
All you have to do is find broken links on other websites that apply to your brand or industry. To find the broken links on a website, you can use Ahrefs Broken Link Checker tool.
After finding the broken link, contact the publisher and let them know about their broken link. While informing them about the backlink, offer them the chance to replace the broken link with your valid link.
Remember that asking a website owner to fix a broken backlink requires some skill and tact. You don’t want to come off as blaming them of being careless. Be sure to your request is short and polite. Also, don’t make requests through public messages like a Tweet. This approach will likely upset and offend the website owner.
For example, when contacting a website, you could use the following message:
I’m (Your Name) from (Your Blog).
I am writing a post on the topic (topic name), and I found one on your website (Website name).
But the link in this post (mention the link) goes to this page (error link).
Here is a screenshot of the broken link.
We actually have a similar blog post and it might make a great replacement.
Either way, just thought I would let you know!
When you approach this method professionally, it’s a great way to earn quality backlinks.
With this tactic, everyone succeeds. The site owner will have less broken links and their visitors will view more up-to-date, valuable content and less 404 errors. Also, you’ll gain a high-quality backlink. (More SEO win-wins for everyone.)
#3 Guest Posting
Guest posting is one of the best and most effective techniques to gain quality backlinks. This has long been a popular link building technique because it’s good for both websites.
What is guest posting?
It is the practice of providing free content to another website or blog in exchange for a link back to your own website.
And every great website wants excellent content. Therefore, people with a great, relevant niche contribute by publishing their quality content to get backlinks.
This technique is a kind of link exchange with each other but it is effective and secure as only relevant blogs will post for each other and it doesn’t generate any spammy links to your website.
Infographics are not just attractive on social media but they are also excellent for SEO. Also, there is a huge demand for infographics as they are easy to understand.
The best infographics start with high quality design and are instructive. One easy hack is to pick a trending topic in your niche and create an infographic. Once your infographic is ready it’s time to promote it on popular sites like:
If your infographics goes viral, then you can get many backlinks. It’s worth the time to submit your infographics to the best websites. Your efforts increase the possibility of getting quality backlinks.
Another technique is to find the best bloggers and influencers in your industry. Once you’ve identified the bloggers, let them know about your infographic. Show how the infographic can be helpful to the content they have generated on the same topic. Often the influencers will link to your website. They get free graphics that enhance their expertise and you get another high-quality one-way backlink.
#5 Brand Mentions
When you are creating quality content and actively engaged in outreach efforts, it’s possible that many websites have mentioned your brand name in their own content. This is excellent. But it’s beneficial if each mention of your brand includes a link back to your site.
Sometimes websites mention your brand without including a link or may even link to the wrong web page. When this happens, reach out to those webmasters and request them to include your website link on your brand name.
It’s helpful to set up a Google alert to discover website that has used your brand name. If the mention doesn’t include a link back to your site, contact the publisher and request one.
You can also use Mention to get live updates about your brand mentions.
#6 Build Links with HARO (Help a Reporter Out)
HARO is a sourcing service which connects journalists and bloggers with appropriate expert references to meet journalists’ demanding deadlines. The service allows businesses to tell their stories. Subscribing to
HARO gives you an opportunity to obtain high-quality backlinks from professional news sites.
Here’s how it goes:
- Sign up for HARO as a source
- You will receive 3 emails every day on weekdays from journalists looking for sources. Look out for source requests related to you and your industry
- Reply to them with some valuable content and your credentials
Read more about how to build backlinks using HARO (Source).
You can also get your name and link back on other websites by offering to write testimonials or leave a review/comment about another brand.
You can select the best tools or brands you work with and reach out to them to write a review about your experience. And companies are usually eager to emphasize testimonials on their website and often link back commentators in the credit line. This will be truly a quality link.
Therefore, contact all those websites, whose services you are using and send a testimonial of that service to their webmaster.
#8 Competitors’ Backlinks
Identify your competitors’ backlinks and analyze the sources of their backlinks. You can use backlink analysis tools such as:
- Google Alerts
For example, in Ahrefs, you would use the Link Intersect tool to see your competitors’ backlinks.
Enter your competitors’ site URL in “Show me who is linking to” section and leave “But doesn’t link to” section blank. Then click on “Show link opportunities”. You will notice all the domains that link to your competitor.
Now, if your competitor can receive a backlink from a particular domain, then it’s like you can also get one from that domain. Also, you can see all the link building techniques of your competitors by performing their backlink analysis.
For example, if your competitor has done guest posting on a website, then you can also generate a blog and send it to that website and request a backlink from them.
#9 Content Pieces That Are Round-Ups
This one is my favorite tactics. The basic concept of the “round-up” is a give and take method.
You write a content piece that compiles a certain type of blogs. Like Jordan Stella did here: Top 25 Digital Marketing Articles – Week of 06/07/19.
He then sent an email to the writers in this list requesting a backlink. Here’s what his email looked like:
People love it when their work is appreciated. And they will definitely appreciate you in return.
By default, when you know how to get free quality backlinks, your SERP will improve and your site will get more traffic. The 9 simple strategies in this article will improve your results and make your marketing responsibilities easier.
Also, don’t assume that you’ll get a bunch of backlinks within a few days. It takes time. You need to dedicate regular and consistent efforts to get backlinks.
The links you build should be natural, so they don’t hurt your online rankings.
