So, fans are getting crazy anxious about the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.
There are those who put every episode under the microscope for years and those who are newly born Whovians, reposting every “Doctor” meme out there. Being a Whovian myself, will be waiting breathless for this longest-running science fiction show on TV.
Even as a wee lad watching the show in the early ‘80s, I knew there was something special about it. It transcends age, race, and social class and has spoken to me in all of my endeavors.
As a young padawan, I understood the Doctor’s attitude of “Experiment Everything”. Instead of doing things how everyone does something, ask “What if?” Then go out and try it and see what happens!
As a teen, I took to heart his treaty to “Express Yourself” Don’t just follow the crowd because you’re worried about looking foolish! If you’re passionate about something, then say so. It’s usually a clue about who you really are.
So, now, older and much wiser due to his weekly ministrations, I’ve learned many things that I now apply to the world of marketing.
I started out with my earliest lesson, since it still applies. Don’t speculate on what YOU think your potential customer or client wants! Take ACTION! Do A/B testing. Multivariate testing. Experiment with colors, even. Some great tools we use come from Optimizely and Unbounce.
Yes, even in marketing this still applies. If you have data supporting a course of action, say it. Be passionate about your work! Tell your boss or manager what you want to do and why.
Learn from bad experiments and celebrate the good ones. Once you’ve discovered something that grabs people, kick it up a notch!
If you’ve done any amazing content marketing, here’s some ways to repurpose it:
a – Make a podcast/webinar about it.
b – Build a case study or white paper. (You could use it as a free offer in exchange for their email address. Bonus!)
c – Make a Slideshare presentation
d – Guest post – spin the article a bit and submit to places like Stumblr or Reddit
e – eBook – put together several similar posts/articles into an eBook offering
f – Infographic – use data from your content and rebuild it visually. Then submit it to Pinterest.
Too often, I’ve seen new marketers, fresh out of out-dated marketing classes, try and create branding that’s “professional” and “corporate”, and it ends up being B-O-R-I-N-G! Instead have some fun! Remember running through the grass barefoot. Play. Wear a fez and bow tie. Make your company mascot a beaver. 🙂
Just like fish sticks and custard might sound a bit odd, combining two vastly different ideas might just save your life.
Do whatever it takes to save the day. Your potential clients struggle with real problems. So Help Them!! Not vague steps. Make a tutorial, a template, a video, or something that will point out exactly what they need.
That’s right. Stay calm and don’t blink. Emerging technologies and changes in marketing standards can creep up on you before you know it, and poof!! , you’re carried off to a realm of suffering simply because you didn’t keep your eyes open. Keep up to date by subscribing to industry blogs. Make time for webinars. Follow and contribute to online communities.
9) Be Proud of Your Beliefs and who you are… Because AuthorRank is Coming
Of course, there are many other lessons to be learned from Doctor Who, like don’t go on the adipose diet, Daleks CAN climb stairs, angel statues should be feared, but it’s the ones I can apply to both my personal and work life that have stuck with me. So, I saved the best for last. The one I keep in mind and close to my heart.
10) We’re all stories, in the end… just make it a good one, eh?
