Do you remember the last time you were the victim of click bait?
If you work online, it probably wasn’t that long ago…
You just had to know how your mind would be blown by “#34 on the list” or how you’d never believe “what he did after a herd of sheep showed up on his doorstep.”
You NEEDED to click the link — and regretted your decision almost immediately afterward.
Even though these types of titles are unspeakably annoying they still manage to attract our attention.
The problem with using them to promote your content is that they fail in two very important ways:
1) Visitors rarely engage with the content.
2) They usually decline to take part in any conversion process.
Once someone has clicked on the over-hyped and manipulative headline they tend to leave the page fairly quickly. While these types of titles are often successful at attracting visitors, they do not promote engagement and conversions.
Writing powerful headlines that attract attention is critical. Without a strong title, no one will care about the masterpiece of content that you’ve just spent 17 hours spoon-feeding into existence. But if you fail to deliver on the promise that your headline advertises then you will lose all credibility.
This infographic from Hubspot outlines research that reveals common elements found in compelling headlines. These are simple tweaks that can be used to drive people to click on your titles, increase audience reach and generate new leads.
