When it comes to organic search, even the “lightweight” ranking signals should not be dismissed.
This is especially true if your competitors have an equal SEO standing.
According to a recent article on Search Engine Journal, using the HTTPS website format may give you a slight edge in the search results.
Secure search has been touted as one Google’s top priorities, and they confirmed this last year by stating that:
“…We’ve been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We’ve seen positive results, so we’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal.”
Last week, Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst, Gary Illyes, also announced a new landmark for the HTTPs initiative.
Although HTTPS is supposed to have less of an influence than other ranking factors, when sites with comparable ranking signals are competing in organic search, the sites that are using HTTPS will be ranked above those that are not.
HTTPS may not be a top priority when compared to other highly influential ranking signals – but it can be used to give you a boost when you are head-to-head with your competitors.
